Someone to Watch Over You: London's Recycling-Bin Spies
In June, Renew London equipped a dozen recycling bins in England's
capital city with technology to track people's smartphones as they
milled about the city. The devices went largely unnoticed until the
appearance of an August article entitled, "This recycling bin is
following you." The piece set off a bit of a media storm as people
realized their every move was suddenly capable of being scrutinized and
stored away.

Today's Story Highlights

The Future of Farming, Part 3: The Business of Urban Ag and CEA
"Growing crops is only half the job. The other half is marketing -- and
if you don't do that right, you will probably go out of business," said
AG Kawamura, founding member of Orange County Produce and
head of the 114-acre Orange County Great Park Farm. Taking a crop
directly to farmers' markets, grocery stores and restaurants to sell is
only a small part of the marketing job.

Yahoo China's Days May Be Numbered
Yahoo China ceased providing news and community services Sunday, a move
that suggests Yahoo may be pulling the plug on its Chinese service.
People attempting to access Yahoo China are now automatically
redirected to now.taobao.com, a public welfare site run by China-based
Alibaba Group, which operated Yahoo China and used to own a large stake
in Yahoo.

Linux at 22: Another Year, Another Step Closer to World Domination
It seems like only yesterday that we here in the Linux blogosphere were
celebrating Linux's 20th birthday, but now here we are, two years later.
Linux has reached the ripe old age of 22, and its creator -- Linus
Torvalds -- marked the occasion in characteristically understated
fashion. Specifically, echoing his original message from 1991, Torvalds
published a similarly worded note late last month.

US Open Tennis App Is a Smash
Second-screen or only screen, the official USTA US Open Tennis
Championships for iPad app brings some of the greatest hardcourt tennis
in the world into your hands, wherever you happen to be. Right there,
the app starts off on a great footing for tennis fans. Fortunately,
through nimble footwork and a lot of great serving, the app does a
decent job of keeping you updated on all the action.

World War 3: The Cyber-Risk of a Missile Attack on Syria
As I write this, the U.S. has deployed a battle group to Syria in
preparation for a missile strike against its government, and Russia has
deployed what appears to be a counter force. What most seem not to be
factoring in is that Syria has already fired its warning shot with
attacks on Twitter and The New York Times, at least. I say "at least,"
because reporting of attacks isn't comprehensive.
