Today's Story Highlights
Researchers Find Endangered Species on Their iPod Playlists
Biologists are using a novel blend of technology and data sharing to
track endangered wildlife. A new report details the results of about
five years of experiments in tracking the vocal activity of birds,
frogs, insects and mammals. Researchers set up an automated remote
biodiversity monitoring network designed to address one of the biggest
challenges of working in environmental conservation.

Rain Forest 1, Amazon 0
A group of countries in Latin America seems to have successfully blocked
online retail giant Amazon from using ".amazon" as an Internet address
suffix. A committee from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers, which oversees top-level domain names, recommended that .amazon
be precluded from the list of possible top-level domains.

gReader Pro Offers a Snappy RSS Experience
Google Reader was popular for a reason: It was fast, and it allowed news
fans to rapidly assimilate news, synced cross-device, using a super-
efficient visual RSS headline-only scan. The lack of lofty white space
in the Google product and the crammed-in text housed in tightly packed
headers are unusual among newer magazine-style and visually rich apps.

HTC One Gets a Mini Me
In a market where bigger is increasingly considered better, HTC on
Thursday bucked the trend and announced the HTC One Mini, a compact
version of its HTC One smartphone. With a 4.3-inch 720p display, the new
device is actually not that much smaller than the flagship HTC One,
which sports a 4.7-inch display. The HTC One Mini runs on Android 4.2,
also known as "Jelly Bean."

Google May Be Spinning Wheels With Drive Encryption Plans
Google, which is fighting government requests for data in two courts and
demanding greater transparency in the wake of the brouhaha over the
NSA's PRISM program, reportedly also is experimenting with encrypting
files on Google Drive. Some files may already have been encrypted. In
related news, a coalition of privacy advocates and businesses have
called on the government for greater transparency.
