Today's Story Highlights
Microsoft Slips on Surface
Microsoft on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings that missed
expectations, blaming the disappointing results on the PC market
slowdown and a write-down of Surface RT inventory. Q4 net earnings were
$4.97 billion, or 59 cents per share on revenue of $19.9 billion. The
$900 million Surface write-down amounted to 7 cents per share.

IBM's Smart CSL Buy
Over the past three-plus decades, it is hard to think of a business
computing-related technology that's driven more fundamental value than
virtualization, and it's for a very simple reason: Since hardware
evolves at a far faster pace than software, systems tend to deliver far
more performance than needed, meaning they are drastically
underutilized.

Notes From the iPhone Rumor Trail
As rumors swirl about the next iPhone, the current models of Apple's
popular smartphone may be selling better than expected. Sales of the
iPhone for the quarter that ended June 30 will beat Wall Street
expectations, according to a report released Wednesday by Morgan
Stanley. Some 29 million to 32 million units were sold during the
period, 10-20 percent better than the 26.5 million units expected.

Adobe Puts Marketers Into More Social Situations
Adobe has pushed further into marketing automation with the launch of
Adobe Social, an application that expands the company's integrations
with social networking sites and pretty much gives users a 360-degree
view of their customers. Integrated with Flickr, Foursquare, Instagram
and LinkedIn, Social will, in essence, enable real-time monitoring
across thousands of social networks.

3D Printing, Robotics and the Future of Manufacturing
The potential of 3D printing and robotics is nothing if not inspiring,
but it's difficult even to imagine the extent of the inroads they will
make in our manufacturing base or the myriad products they'll eventually
produce. Numerous people currently employed in the manufacturing segment
could very well be displaced because of the growing ubiquity of 3D
printing and robotics.

Dell, Icahn Slug It Out on Thin Ice
After months of mounting anticipation, Dell on Thursday delayed a
critical vote that will decide its future. Specifically, the scheduled
special meeting of stockholders -- originally intended to vote on
Michael Dell's proposed buyout of the company for $24.4 billion -- was
convened and adjourned to provide additional time to solicit proxies
from Dell stockholders, the company announced.
