Someone to Watch Over You: London's Recycling-Bin Spies
In June, Renew London equipped a dozen recycling bins in England's
capital city with technology to track people's smartphones as they
milled about the city. The devices went largely unnoticed until the
appearance of an August article entitled, "This recycling bin is
following you." The piece set off a bit of a media storm as people
realized their every move was suddenly capable of being scrutinized and
stored away.

Today's Story Highlights

Android Team's Munchies Lead to Genius KitKat Tie-In
The Internet is abuzz with news that Google has teamed up with food
giant Nestle to name the next version of Android after the latter's
famous chocolate bar -- KitKat -- rather than continue its tradition of
nonbranded nomenclature with the name "Key Lime Pie." KitKat will be
Android 4.4 and not Android 5 as some expected. Both the Android and
KitKat brands have worldwide recognition.

Federal OASIS Program Could Quench IT Providers' Thirst
Any time the U.S. government signals it is embarking on a program to
invest tens of billions of dollars, potential vendors take notice --
especially during a time of spending restraint. The federal government,
through the General Services Administration, has launched a new program
for the procurement of a wide range of professional support services.

The Waxing of Apple While Windows Wanes
Just who killed the PC, anyway? For if it's not dead yet, it surely will
be in a few years -- at least according to IDC, which now projects that
worldwide PC shipments will fall by 9.7 percent this year, representing
the largest market contraction on record. The market is expected to
decline through 2014. In 2015, it will shift into single-digit modest
growth, IDC projects.

Analog Marketing Strategies for a Digital World
Do you remember walking by telephone poles at downtown intersections 10
or 20 years ago and seeing them covered in fliers, placards and notices?
If it was a really popular intersection, there were probably several
layers of paper pinned, tacked, taped and stapled on top of each other.
If the telephone pole was wooden, you could see generations of old
staples and tacks still biting deep into the wood.

Microsoft Takes Nokia Under Its Wing
Microsoft on Tuesday announced that it will pay more than $7 billion to
buy all of Nokia's devices and services business and to license Nokia's
patents as it seeks to make some headway in the mobile market. The
transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014 subject to
approval by Nokia's shareholders, a green light from regulators, and
other conditions.
