Today's Story Highlights

Google's Little Hummingbird Can Tell You More
Google on Thursday introduced a new search algorithm called
"Hummingbird." The company actually started rolling out the algorithm
about a month ago, but it formally unveiled it on the 15-year
anniversary of Google Search's launch. At the heart of the algorithm
is a new, better ranking system that makes results more useful and
relevant, according to Google.

Little Interest in Internet Among the Offline 15 Percent
An ever-increasing proportion of the world's communications and activity
occurs online, but that doesn't mean everyone has bought into the
concept. In fact, a full 15 percent of American adults remain offline,
according to a new report released Wednesday by the Pew Internet &
American Life Project. Some 92 percent of offline adults are not
interested in using the Internet and email, Pew estimates.

Sales-Marketing Misalignment Hamstrings CRM
Talk to any sales or marketing consultant, and you'll probably get an
earful about "sales-marketing misalignment" -- the single dumbest reason
that otherwise worthy businesses struggle. While the two sides are
warring over who's to blame for lackluster sales, there's little chance
they'll cooperate around customer data that can benefit both sales and
marketing.

Amazon's Fire HDX Could Torch the Competition
Amazon on Wednesday announced the Kindle Fire HDX, the third generation
of its line of tablets. It comes in 7-inch and 8.9-inch versions and has
an HDX display, a quad-core 2.2 GHz processor, more memory and dual
stereo speakers. It includes free 24x7x365 tech support and a host of
new features. Amazon "provides better hardware at a lower cost than
Apple," said tech analyst Rob Enderle.

Valve Beta Boosts Linux Gaming Full Steam Ahead
Valve Software will later this year beta test 300 hardware boxes running
its Linux-based SteamOS, a standalone operating system for entertainment
appliances in consumers' living rooms. The prototype box for the Steam
platform, which is optimized for gaming in the living room, is
completely upgradable and open. Beta testers are encouraged to hack or
mod the box.
