| Changes to SQL Server 2014 Always On Availability Groups | | By Michael Otey, mike.otey@penton.com AlwaysOn Availability Groups were first introduced with SQL Server 2012, and they are, without a doubt, one of the most compelling reasons to migrate to SQL Server 2012. AlwaysOn Availability Groups enable high availability and disaster recovery for multiple SQL Server databases without the need for a shared storage SAN. Replicas can be used to offload backups and reporting workloads from the primary SQL Server instance.

AlwaysOn Availability Groups provide high availability for multiple databases, and they can make use of multiple secondary replicas. Each secondary SQL Server replica has its own copy of the protected databases. AlwaysOn Availability Groups continuously synchronize transactions from the primary replica to each of the secondary replicas. This replication can be configured as synchronous or asynchronous to support local high availability or remote disaster recovery. More . . . | | | | ADVERTISEMENT | Do Your Reports Have Stale Data? READ PAPER "TIPS FOR REAL-TIME DATA AND REPORTING" | | | | Integrating MongoDB and Open Source Data Stores with Power Pivot | | By Mark Kromer | | Business users and analysts make up the majority of our target personas in the business intelligence world. And it's not unique to SQL Server BI professionals that Excel is a preferred tool for analysis, pivoting and charting. We talk a lot about Power Pivot (yes, I remembered to put a space in the name that time!) and Power View as ways to model the source data (Power Pivot) and present it as compelling data visualizations (Power View). Presenting your organization's complex data as a simple set of compelling reports and flows is central to your value in the role of BI professional. More . . . | | Truncating SQL Server Job History | | By Michael K. Campbell | | A maintenance task that many 'reluctant DBAs' commonly overlook is the need to keep historical information in the msdb database trimmed, or 'truncated' on a semi-regular basis. Otherwise, it IS possible for so much data to get 'crammed' into this database over time to the point where performance can actual degrade. A common example or scenario of this is when you keep too much backup history on tab and go to use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to run a 'restore' operation and the dialog just seems to churn, and churn, and churn, and churn forever (as it's silently processing virtually every restore operation from the vast store of historical information it has on hand).) As such, I thought it would be worthwhile to point out a couple of key considerations and details associated with truncating SQL Server Job history.
