Sorting Out the Big Data Myths (43:24)
Debunking myths around Big Data should be a first step to making better
business decisions for improving data analysis and data management
capabilities in a company. As the volume and purpose of data and
business intelligence has dramatically shifted, older notions and
misconceptions -- what amount to myths about data infrastructure -- need
to updated and corrected, too.

Today's Story Highlights

Hacker Invades Baby Monitor in Texas Home
A hacker was able to gain access to a baby monitor on Saturday night,
terrifying a Texas couple as they heard the virtual intruder speak
offensively to their sleeping daughter. The parents use an Internet-
connected baby monitor that is equipped with a camera to monitor the
activity in their 2-year-old daughter's bedroom. Last weekend, the
father heard strange noises coming over the device.

Samsung's OLED TV: The Couple That Plays Together Stays Together
Competition heated up in the OLED TV market Tuesday as Samsung said it
was shipping its first production model using the technology and that it
would sell for $8,999. That price will choke most TV shoppers, but it's
being hailed as a new low price point for displays sporting the state-
of-the-art technology. The only other OLED TV in the market, made by
Samsung's arch rival LG, sells for $15,000.

Al-Qaeda Mocked After Seeking Suggestions on Twitter
A recent tweet from Al-Qaeda asking for ideas on the "development of
jihadist media" set off a deluge of responses mocking the extremist
group. Terrorism expert J.M. Berger, who has more than 13,000 followers,
tweeted about Al-Qaeda's call for ideas along with the Islamic hashtag
the group wanted to use. After that, the trolls took over.

Microsoft Sets Oct. 18 Arrival Date for Spiffed-Up Windows 8.1
Microsoft on Wednesday announced that it will begin rolling out Windows
8.1 to the general public on Oct. 18. Win 8.1 will be available as a
free update for Windows 8 users through the Windows Store, and it will
also be available at retail outlets and on new devices running the
Windows OS. Microsoft appears to be banking heavily on the back-to-
school shopping season to push Windows 8.1.

Library's Web Filter Decides Hamlet Access Not to Be
A British man was unable to access Shakespeare's classic Hamlet at a
public library because the library's WiFi network detected "violent
content." The snafu was caused by a new Web filter that weeds out smut
and violence, the British Library said, adding that it is "tweaking" the
service. Hamlet, violence and all, is now accessible.
