Why Oslo Is Off-Limits to Apple's Aerial Photographers
Apple's taken plenty of flak for its mapping system, and some of it is
well-deserved. After all, the maps have erroneously led drivers into the
middle of nowhere and shown buildings that appear as though they're
melting. Don't blame Apple if its images of Oslo, Norway, aren't
crystal-clear, however. That one's not on Apple. Norway has denied Apple
the license required to take aerial photos of Oslo.

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft Stock Surges on News of Ballmer's Retirement
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced on Friday that he will step down
from his post some time within the next 12 months, depending on when a
successor is chosen. Stocks in the company surged 7 percent in early
trading following the news. "This is a time of important transformation
for Microsoft," Ballmer said in an internal email that was posted on the
Microsoft news center on Friday.

HP Rearranges Chairs in Hopes of Propelling Turnaround
Hewlett-Packard announced some changes to its executive lineup on
Wednesday -- the same day it posted a quarterly earnings report that
fell short of analyst expectations. Revenue for HP's third fiscal
quarter was $27.2 billion, the company reported, down 8 percent from the
$29.7 billion it posted a year earlier. HP earned about 86 cents per
share on non-GAAP earnings.

Failed Funding Effort Blunts Canonical's Ubuntu Edge
Canonical raised more than $12 million over 30 frantic days of
crowdfunding its ambitious Ubuntu Edge superphone project, but it was
still short some $20 million by the time the effort closed on Wednesday.
The company's target was $32 million. "We raised $12,809,906, making the
Edge the world's biggest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign," wrote
Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth.

The Coming of the Digital Wallets
What are the three objects that you're most likely to grab as you leave
the house today? They are likely to be your keys, your smartphone and
your wallet, complete with cash and plastic bank cards. Well, if some
forward-thinkers have their way, within a short time you'll just be
grabbing the keys and phone only -- the plastic stays at home. Digital
wallets may be about to go mainstream stateside.

J.Crew Earns Top Marks on Retailer Report Cards
Top brands continue to push the envelope in customer service generally,
but that's particularly true in the online sphere. So reports
StellaService, which just this week published new data that ranks the
top retailers in terms of customer service performance over the last
month. "Some of these guys are consistently at the top of their
category," said StellaService's Kevon Hills.

Rumors Running Wild as Sept. 10 Draws Near
Apple fans are gearing up for the Big Event on Sept. 10 and -- drumroll,
please! -- the introduction of its next iPhone. By now company watchers
have agreed that the following is the likely go-to-market blueprint for
Apple this time around: The company is introducing two devices -- one
with its usual high-end features, sleek design and iterative upgrades;
the other, a cheaper device.
