Sorting Out the Big Data Myths (43:24)
Debunking myths around Big Data should be a first step to making better
business decisions for improving data analysis and data management
capabilities in a company. As the volume and purpose of data and
business intelligence has dramatically shifted, older notions and
misconceptions -- what amount to myths about data infrastructure -- need
to updated and corrected, too.

Today's Story Highlights

Starstruck Facebook Preps New Celebrity Come On
Facebook reportedly is testing a VIP-only mobile app that would
encourage celebrities to choose it over other social networks for
posting photos and updates, as well as interacting with fans. The mobile
app would make it easier for celebrities or their staffs to post content
and status updates, as well as drive user engagement by quickly
responding to fan comments, questions and reactions.

Can Apple Recapture the Wow?
The question I have for Apple, from my perspective as an industry
analyst, is simple: What's your next move? We have watched the company
transform the music space with the iPod, the smartphone space with the
iPhone and the tablet space with the iPad. However, it has not had a
breakthrough industry-changing product in the last few years. So what
can we expect from Apple on Sept. 10?

Steve Jobs Must Have Had the Worst Best Friend Ever
Oracle CEO Larry Ellison seems to think Apple is doomed now that Steve
Jobs is gone. He essentially said so, publicly, to master interviewer
Charlie Rose. He did it with a passively dramatic raising and lowering
of his finger. My first reaction was that Ellison -- undeniably one of
the most rigorous, ruthless and successful tech CEOs on the planet --
must not have known Steve Jobs all that well.

Millennial Buys Rival Jumptap in Mobile Ad Push
Millennial Media announced on Tuesday that it will acquire competitor
Jumptap in a stock transaction worth approximately $225 million. Under
the terms of the agreement, Jumptap shareholders will receive
approximately 24.6 million shares of Millennial Media. The combined
company will be able to offer a number of services in this space that
will be able to run across a variety of different screens.

Linux Burrows Deeper Into the Enterprise
Server-side Linux has been pushing into the enterprise for some years
now, and 42 percent of respondents to a survey conducted on behalf of
Linux vendor SUSE said it was either their primary server OS or one of
their top server platforms. Perhaps more importantly, Linux is extending
its reach beyond its traditional areas of supercomputing, Web servers,
Internet hosting and application development.

Brains Meet Brawn as Smartphones Beat Dumbphones on Sales
Smartphones have long offered capabilities feature phones don't, but on
Wednesday it became clear that global sales are now another dimension on
which they excel. Specifically, smartphone sales surpassed feature phone
sales in the worldwide market for the first time in the second quarter
of 2013, Gartner reported, reaching 225 million units compared with
feature phones' 210 million.
