Matt Brimer: How General Assembly is Innovating Education for the Future

Although still in my mid-20s, I’m slowly starting to accept that the only “30 Under 30″ list on I’ll ever make it is the “30 Under 30 Who Consume the Most Popeyes and Chipotle Per Week.” Actually, on second thought, I would love to be on that list. For General Assembly cofounder Matt Brimer, his placement on Inc. Magazine’s “30 Under 30″ puts him on an entirely different plane of achievements.

With a history of entrepreneurial pursuits, Brimer is certainly deserving of every list on which he’s recognized as a leader in the business community. While at Yale, he served as VP and Chief Innovation Officer of the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, and fostered interest in, and education of, entrepreneurship throughout the university community.

More notably, Brimer worked at Yale’s Office of Digital Dissemination, where he helped the university share its digital assets online – an idea that General Assembly has adopted in its effort to innovate education.

Brimer and his three other cofounders are building General Assembly to help bridge the gap between the traditional, liberal arts education and the required skills needed for careers in technology, design, and business. In partnership with the City of New York, the company initially launched as a co-working space in early 2011, but has since become an important educational resource for people wanting to adapt in an increasingly digital world. As industries continue to implement technology into their various business strategies, General Assembly plays a heightened role in providing real-world, practical, skills-oriented, and outcome-oriented education.

Watch Matt as he talks about how General Assembly is innovating education and its role in a tech-intensive business world. You can watch the video here.

Tech Cocktail Week is a monthly series of events that takes place downtown Las Vegas and is produced in partnership with Tony Hsieh's Downtown Project.
