How the US-French Connection Became a Digital Divide (20:11)
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the United States had thwarted
France's plans to propose new international tax regulations targeting
digital companies like Google and Amazon. Indeed, this is not the first
time U.S. tech companies have rubbed France the wrong way. This podcast
examines France's philosophy toward tech giants and discusses whether or
not France's annoyance with U.S. tech companies has anything to do with
the fact that they are, well, from the U.S.

Today's Story Highlights

Nvidia Shows Dazzling Detail in Next-Gen Project Logan Demo
Nvidia demoed the first processor from Project Logan, its next-
generation CUDA-capable mobile processor, at the Siggraph conference and
exhibition this week. The processor uses the efficient processing cores
from Nvidia's Kepler high-performance computing architecture. Nvidia's
CUDA, combined with Kepler, effectively lets mobile devices perform
tasks that would previously have required PCs.

Huawei Gets Anti-Porn Tech Right, UK Says
Britain is simultaneously investigating and praising Chinese
telecommunication firm Huawei. OK, so the UK didn't out and compliment
Huawei. Less than a week after British authorities launched a
cybersecurity review of the company, however, Prime Minister David
Cameron said that British telecommunications company TalkTalk had shown
"great leadership" in implementing its online pornography filter.

VuPack Camera Mount Puts You Back in the Picture
One of the most fundamental keys to garnering interest in a
democratically funded project is to propose something that people are
going to seriously want. Wishy-washy concepts won't cut it -- it's got
to be seductive. The svelte Pebble smartwatch is a good example of this
funding technique, and it raised millions on Kickstarter. The Ouya video
game console is another.

How Firefox OS Could Sneak Into the Smartphone Chicken Coop
Spanish wireless network Telefónica recently started selling a super-
cheap Linux-driven phone called the "ZTE Open" for the equivalent of
around $90, which includes about $40 worth of prepay. Essentially, it's
a $50 smartphone. Aside from the bottom-end retail price, what's unique
about this smartphone is that it's the first to use Firefox OS.

Microsoft Holds Out Olive Branch to Indie Game Devs
It was just about a month ago that Microsoft relaxed the rules for
players of its forthcoming Xbox One, and on Thursday it made a similar
concession for small game developers. Specifically, in a break with past
policies, the company announced that it will allow small, independent
game makers to self-publish their games on Xbox Live without the backing
of an established publisher.

Beijing's 'Water Army' Swamps Social Media
Long known for its out-and-out censorship, Beijing now appears to be
filling Chinese social media with pro-government messages. The new tack
was on full display after the Thursday indictment of fallen Communist
Party member Bo Xilai, who was busted for corruption and abuse of power
in 2012. While China's social media censors were surely working
overtime, so too were its copywriters.
