Podcast
How the US-French Connection Became a Digital Divide (20:11)
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the United States had thwarted
France's plans to propose new international tax regulations targeting
digital companies like Google and Amazon. Indeed, this is not the first
time U.S. tech companies have rubbed France the wrong way. This podcast
examines France's philosophy toward tech giants and discusses whether or
not France's annoyance with U.S. tech companies has anything to do with
the fact that they are, well, from the U.S.

Today's Story Highlights

How to Manage Email and Stop It From Overwhelming You
Email has been around since before the Internet, but while the email
technology itself hasn't changed much since the 1970s, the volume of it
has. Some people, in fact, receive hundreds of messages a day. That's a
threat to a human's ability to process information. There are, however,
ways to manage email. Here's how to go about it. Shut down your in-box
if you find emails are distracting you.

Sleep as Android Analyzes You In and Out of Soft Slumber
Here's another app that takes personal analytics to the maximum. I've
already looked at Android workout app Runtastic Pro, which allows for
elaborate analytics to be run on exercise routines, conceivably enabling
a honed fitness regimen. Well, here's an app that lets you do the same
kind of in-depth data-crunching on another element of life: sleep
patterns.

The Case for a Bigger, Badder iPad
I'm wondering if we're not heading toward a larger iPad. First, Mac
sales were down a bit last quarter. No big deal -- there haven't been
any major upgrades, and the MacBook Air upgrade came late in June. Sold
well, apparently. While Apple's Mac sales haven't been slipping and
sliding like PC sales, clearly an awful lot of traditional computing has
shifted to smartphones and tablets.

Flipboard Tests the Web Waters in Read-Only Form
After launching as a mobile-only app for tablets and smartphones,
Flipboard has landed on the desktop. Originally designed for the iPad
when it launched back in 2010, Flipboard lets users create their own
digital magazines from stories in the news. It used to be, however, that
the only people who could view and browse those creations were other
Flipboard users on mobile devices.

Finnish Vote Imminent on Crowdsourced Copyright Law
Lawmakers in Finland will vote on a crowdsourced legislative proposal
that, if approved, would change the nation's copyright laws. Last year,
Finland's constitution was modified to allow citizens to submit
proposals to Parliament, so long as said proposals obtained 50,000
supporters within six months. One of the proposals to garner the
requisite support is the "Common Sense in Copyright Act."

Google Sticks It to the Home Entertainment Market
Google on Wednesday unveiled a new Nexus 7 as part of its latest assault
on the market for the connected living room. Another prong of that
attack is Chromecast, a streaming content stick that plugs into a TV
set's HDMI socket and lets users stream videos and other content
seamlessly between the TV and any connected device, ranging from
smartphones to tablets to laptops.
