How the US-French Connection Became a Digital Divide (20:11)
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the United States had thwarted
France's plans to propose new international tax regulations targeting
digital companies like Google and Amazon. Indeed, this is not the first
time U.S. tech companies have rubbed France the wrong way. This podcast
examines France's philosophy toward tech giants and discusses whether or
not France's annoyance with U.S. tech companies has anything to do with
the fact that they are, well, from the U.S.

Today's Story Highlights

Amazon Shakes Off Small Q2 Loss
A 22 percent revenue increase in its second quarter wasn't enough to
keep Amazon from reporting an unexpected $7 million loss on Thursday,
which it attributed partially to a weakened European economy. The
company's stock, which has been up more than 20 percent for the year
overall, tumbled more than 2 percent in after-hours trading but had
recovered by Friday afternoon.

PRISM Could Put the Kibosh on US Trade Abroad
American cloud service providers seeking business abroad are feeling the
fallout from the NSA's PRISM surveillance program, suggests a month-long
online survey by the Cloud Security Alliance. Fifty-six percent of more
than 200 overseas respondents said they were less likely to use U.S.-
based cloud providers, and another 10 percent had canceled projects with
U.S.-based cloud service providers.

Chromecast: Big Threats Come in Small Packages?
Google shook up the streaming video world Wednesday when it introduced a
$35 HDMI dongle that allows content to be airmailed from a smartphone,
tablet or laptop to a TV. Called "Chromecast," the unit is already being
hailed as a potential streaming set-top box killer. "It could make the
set-top box obsolete," said tech analyst Rob Enderle. "It makes the set-
top box redundant."

Tech Vendors Are Treating Customers Worse Than Before
Businesses depend on their customers, and it would make sense that good
customer service would translate into loyalty and sales, but high-tech
vendors don't seem to have gotten the message. The average customer
experience rating for tech vendors fell from 58 percent to 52 percent
since last year, in on a survey of 800 IT professionals on their
customer experiences with 54 large high-tech vendors.

Failed Vote Means No End in Sight to NSA's Data Slurping
A proposal to restrict the NSA's surveillance of Americans' phone calls
was defeated by a mere 12 votes in the U.S. House on Wednesday in a
battle that drew unusual bipartisan support at a time when partisanship
is running at an all-time-high. The amendment to the defense-spending
bill sought to restrict the collection of metadata to instances
connected to a relevant ongoing investigation.
