How the US-French Connection Became a Digital Divide (20:11)
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the United States had thwarted
France's plans to propose new international tax regulations targeting
digital companies like Google and Amazon. Indeed, this is not the first
time U.S. tech companies have rubbed France the wrong way. This podcast
examines France's philosophy toward tech giants and discusses whether or
not France's annoyance with U.S. tech companies has anything to do with
the fact that they are, well, from the U.S.

Today's Story Highlights
Twitter Says 'Our Bad' for Posting Fake Tweets by Real Users
When a tweet goes out on Twitter that a user didn't send, the concern is
usually that the account has been hijacked by a malicious user. This
week, however, three users on Twitter were surprised to find out that
their user names and images had been used as examples in a marketing
campaign created by Twitter itself. Fake tweets attributed to three real
Twitter accounts were used in a graphic on the Twitter advertising blog.

Facebook Flexes Its Mobile Muscles
Facebook's stock soared Wednesday following the release of its Q2
earnings report, which beat Wall Street expectations. Investors seemed
pleased with the company's strong user growth and better-than-expected
gains from mobile advertising. It reported $1.81 billion in revenue, a
53 percent year-over-year increase, with its biggest gains coming from
mobile, which it has struggled to monetize.

Microsoft's Rip Van Winkle Syndrome
What the heck is wrong at Microsoft? It may be an important company, but
it's an older company that has definitely lost its way. It can recover
but doesn't see how. The solution seems so obvious from the outside.
However, there is a sense that arrogance is getting in the way of clear
thinking. It is keeping Microsoft from becoming great once again. So
what's wrong, and what can it do to recover?

Experian Steps Up Its Social Engagement Push
It can be difficult enough to market to consumers through one channel,
but trying to work across channels compounds that difficulty
considerably. Enter Experian Marketing Services, which recently upgraded
its cross-channel marketing platform with several new features. Experian
regularly updates its application, said the company's Jeff Hassemer.

Dell Doubles Down on a Dime
Michael Dell and investment firm Silver Lake have increased their
takeover bid for Dell by 10 cents to $13.75 a share, a special committee
of Dell's board of directors announced on Wednesday. As a result, the
already-postponed special meeting of stockholders intended for the
official vote on the buyout option was rescheduled for Aug. 2 to give
the committee time to evaluate the revised offer.
