How the US-French Connection Became a Digital Divide (20:11)
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the United States had thwarted
France's plans to propose new international tax regulations targeting
digital companies like Google and Amazon. Indeed, this is not the first
time U.S. tech companies have rubbed France the wrong way. This podcast
examines France's philosophy toward tech giants and discusses whether or
not France's annoyance with U.S. tech companies has anything to do with
the fact that they are, well, from the U.S.

Today's Story Highlights

Verizon's Brand Reboot: Dead Droids Walking?
Verizon Wireless on Tuesday introduced a new family of Droid smartphones
including the Droid Mini, Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx. Starting with this
trio, Motorola Mobility will be the only smartphone manufacturer to
produce handsets under the "Droid" moniker. That's actually a
recommitment between the two partners, which worked together to bring
out the original Droid smartphone.

Federal Plan to Scuttle Phony Electronic Parts Baffles Suppliers
Product integrity is a key element in business and increasingly
important in the information technology sector, where products and
services are highly vulnerable to the creation of copies and
counterfeits. Both IT vendors and their customers are equally at risk
when phony and faulty products enter the supply chain. As one step to
control the flow of counterfeit electronic parts, DoD has proposed new
regulations for industry to follow in the procurement process.

Apple Searches Haystack for Product to Move the Needle
Apple's upcoming new products will be the key to the company's emergence
from its current doldrums, CEO Tim Cook told analysts during its third-
quarter earnings call Tuesday. Asked by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene
Munster if there were any product categories big enough to move the
growth needle for Apple, Cook responded: "We'll see, Gene. We're working
up some stuff that we're really proud of."

SMS Marketing's Fine Line
The case for SMS marketing is easy to make. It's cheap and it's easy. It
can be far-reaching, given how many people carry cellphones now -- and
did I mention that it's cheap? Still, there is a downside to SMS
marketing. For starters, it can be very annoying to consumers,
especially if the targeting is off. Even those who are receptive to text
messages in general can quickly sour on the idea.

Netflix Hits a Triple - Investors Whine for Home Run
Netfllix added 630,000 U.S. streaming customers and achieved profit of
$29 million, or 49 cents a share, in the second quarter of 2013, it
reported on Monday. Those profits represent a dramatic increase from the
same period a year ago. The company's revenue, meanwhile, rose 20
percent year-on-year to $1.07 billion. Netflix's stock price has climbed
by close to 200 percent this year.
